Emma Forrest, a British journalist, was just 22 and living the fast life in New York City when she realized that her quirks had gone beyond eccentricity. In a cycle of loneliness, damaging relationships, and destructive behavior, she found herself in the chair of a slim, balding, and effortlessly optimistic psychiatrist - a man whose wisdom and humanity would wrench her from the dangerous tide after she tried to end her life. She was on the brink of drowning, but she was still working, still exploring, still writing, and she had also fallen deeply in love. One day, when Emma called to make an appointment with her psychiatrist, she found no one there. He had died, shockingly, at the age of 53, leaving behind a young family. Reeling from the premature death of a man who had become her anchor after she turned up on his doorstep, she was adrift. And when her all-consuming romantic relationship also fell apart, Emma was forced to cling to the page for survival and regain her footing on her own terms. A modern-day fairy tale, Your Voice in My Head is a stunning memoir, clear-eyed and shot through with wit. In her unique voice, Emma Forrest explores the highs and lows of love and the heartbreak of loss.

This book is well-written, feels true and doesn't strain to make its narrator lovable or even all that sympathetic as she examines some harrowing years. (I found her to be both, regardless.) The parallel stories of two devastating losses are skillfully structured and paced, if not necessarily in ideal balance: the psychiatric narrative (serious issues, life-saving analyst) feels incomplete, given its complexity, while the romantic drama might be a tad over-examined, given its relative lack of same. To be fair, it was hard not to imagine an editor standing over the author's shoulder, nudging the love affair with (you might as well know) Colin Farrell into the spotlight. I did reflect, after finishing the book, on all parts of the story and how the pieces fit -- if this can be said kindly of such sad material, it left a satisfying afterglow. That's really all I ask of a memoir -- that the writing is engaging; the narrative voice unguarded, intelligent, and humane; and the story compelling enough to make me ponder it for a while after reading the last page.Product details

Your Voice in My Head (Audible Audio Edition) Emma Forrest Audible Studios for Bloomsbury Books Reviews
Very interesting read. The description of her journey through mental illness is gripping. The relationship aspect is fascinating but secondary to her true struggles through the illness.
I found more the author's take on things and her issues more interesting than the fact she's talking about her relationship with Colin Farrell and her psychiatrist. I find psychology interesting so it was a good read but I don't think I'd ever re-read it.
Great read.
This book really aggravated me. It was presented as a young woman's struggle with mental illness and a tribute to her psychiatrist and it's actually a love letter to Colin Farrell and making sure the world knows she had a relationship with him. It was horribly irresponsible on her part. What about young girls struggling with mental issues who buy this thinking they will find some kind of comfort in it, just to find a couple hundred pages of "I slept with Colin Farrell'?""He loved me, really, he did!!"
I'm so sorry I spent a dime on this and will never read another book of hers again. I also hope she realizes, she is still mentally ill and needs serious help. Amazed that this even got published.
I purchased this book after reading an outstanding review of it, but found myself disappointed, as it fell short of my expectations. I can't quite put my finger on what I found wrong about this book, but something wasn't quite right. I found it to be a little bit rambling as well. It only took me a few hours to read and for $10 I was really hoping it would last a few days at least. All in all, not that bad, but nothing special. Definitely won't be re-reading.
It's a very brave thing to bare your soul, which Emma Forrest does in this book. It's beautifully written, and tells of how she overcame her demons and learned to cope with her disorders and loss.
I enjoyed it, I read it in one day. I would like to give it as a gift, but I feel the cover is deceiving and does not give justice to the book, it gives the wrong impression, as if it is kind of a girlie book, which it is not
