It's a must for everyone who is or has been at a crossroad in their life!
Having made major changes at different times in my life, I wish I’d had Eve Siegel’s book then to help me see opportunities and overcome obstacles. It gently outlines clear steps for envisioning life choices, and is filled with examples of positive changes made by the author and her clients. Success with Soul is written with sensitivity, intelligence, and imagination (not to mention artful design and photography), and I’d recommend it to those seeking guidance in making life transitions.
I am not a particularly introspective person and normally do not read books of this genre. That said, I found Ms. Siegel's book written with a calm and humility that did indeed gave me perspective into my life transition of living with the effects and limitations of a head injury. This book is written out of deep kindness. I particularly enjoyed the anecdotes of her own experiences, written with humor and without a shred of self pride. I found this book to avoid the heavy "how-to-dos" that have turned me off to other books of this type. Rather, I was drawn in by its underlying, pervasive and generous tone of acceptance. I recommend this book to anyone undertaking any kind of transition. It will empower and inspire you to play to your strengths and to put your best foot forward!
Success with Soul- Loving Your Livelihood, Living in Balance addresses an issue that almost everyone considers at some point - how to find work (defined broadly) that enhances their lives. This book derives a lot of its force from the personal journey the author has gone through-- from director of a nonprofit educational program to somatic therapist and ultimately, certified life coach. Looking back, she realized that she could have made her career transitions sooner and more easily if she'd had the support of a qualified coach.
This book is a "mini-guide" for people making their own transitions. It offers a path for people who are dissatisfied with their work, but who haven't been able to find a way to make changes on their own. Each chapter in the book defines a step in the process, giving structure to what can be a very unsettling experience.
Success with Soul incorporates thoughts from many writers and coaching practitioners, demonstrating the wide body of knowledge that has been developed in this field. Sometimes the jargon can be a little hard to relate to for the uninitiated. Fortunately, there are plenty of examples to ground the concepts in everyday life.
Some of the most compelling ones come from the author's coaching experience. Often, she "challenges" her clients to take a seemingly small step clearing out their cluttered apartment, taking a vacation without their laptop, making time for meditative walks, etc. This helps get them out of habitual patterns and see new possibilities in their lives. Sometimes, we’re lucky enough to come across the right book at a moment when the content really speaks to us. That’s what happened for me with Success With Soul. I am in the midst of a work transition and trying to get clear on what I truly want to do next and how I can make a difference through my work. Success With Soul inspired me to take the time to break out of the box of what was comfortable, known and just a little beyond my reach and think bigger about work that is truly fulfilling, as Siegel says, “holding the biggest picture possible.” Siegel uses stories, exercises and insightful quotes to prompt thoughtful reflection that makes you stop and reconsider your assumptions about your future. The practical exercises are particularly helpful, but the author’s beautiful writing and her own story of transition captivated me. I recommend this book for anyone who is at a tipping point of change and seeking guidance on proceeding with intentionality. One tip I recommend purchasing the paperback versus version. With the paperback, you can more easily flip back to exercises you didn’t get to.
