Tierra Texas is a town like any other small American town in 1944 -- caught up in the war, boys in the military, men and friends gone to the city to work in the airplane factories, everyone wishing it was over and life would go back to what it was before. Everyone except Poppy Sullivan, who used his perch as owner of the local newspaper to know every secret -- who had some hidden tires, extra ration stamps, a stash of gasoline, cattle hidden from the government buyers. It was a town where everyone knew everyone's business. So, when the Thursday before Easter an announcement was posted on the post office bulletin board that Poppy's daughter Virginia had eloped with her boyfriend, Captain Hastings, over Thanksgiving, the whole town was surprised, no one more than Virginia herself, who knew nothing about it.
Virginia's War is a funny and wistful view of a simpler time where the worst of citizens took care of poor people and the best of citizens kept up a healthy trade in black market ration coupons, where boys played at soldiers and women wanted to have more of a say in their own lives.
It is a finalist in 2009 for Best Novel of the South and for Best Historical Fiction by the Military Writers Society of America.

London offers the reader an engaging perspective on World War II from the home front with this first book of his French Letters trilogy. Small town life in the Texas Panhandle town of Tierra on the surface seems simpler than life today, but wartime shortages and rationing and the constant uncertainties of whether their young men would return alive complicates everything. Primarily told from the naive viewpoint of youngster Sandy, who quickly learns to understand things far beyond his years, the book illustrates how Tierra's citizenry copes.The newspaper announcement of Virginia's elopement with her doctor-soldier boyfriend, serving in Europe, surprises her as much as the rest of the town -- an announcement designed by her father, without her consent, to provide cover for her unplanned pregnancy. The news of her pregnancy and their elopement would have certainly surprised her "husband." London's nearly poetic prose weaves several apparently separate stories into a convergence and a surprise ending.
"French Letters: Virginia's War" provides a bittersweet, nostalgic picture of life on the near side of a global war, while allowing you to enjoy a well-told story involving characters about whom you will care.

With Virginia's War, Jack London paints a vivid and poignant portrait of life on the home front during World War II in the small town of Tierra, Texas. Starting with a compelling prologue, Mr. London brings the town of Tierra and its residents to life, drawing us into the plight of Virginia Sullivan and the repercussions of her unexpected pregnancy. The novel is smartly written and engaging, with an uncommon human touch and resonance that stands out and makes the book a first-class read.
I guess I don't have words to give credit the author deserves. Such a simple story and yet ... unexpected Twists and turns, plenty of period and cultural information that draws the reader into a virtual reality.
This book provides an interesting view of World War II. It details the lives of those left in a small town in west Texas and the impact the war has on everyone. The characters are all impacted in various ways by the loss of friends and loved ones to the war effort, the rationing, the hardships placed on those left in the town and the few luxuries enjoyed by those who take advantage. It is an interesting read that holds your attention and makes you want to know more about Virginia and her personal war.

I liked the story of what was going on at home while the men were away at war. Not always the stuff of heroes as the newspaper editor and the sherriff were town bullies controlling things. Virginia did not seem completely nor wholly developed to me, more distant and uninvolved in spite of the fact that it is the story of what happened in her life. The author cleverly hints at occurrances without revealing what really happened. It is effectively done, and leaves the door open for sequels.
I enjoyed French Letters for it's unique take on WWII. Here we see the war and rationing and evasion of rationing through the eyes and actions of the adults and youngsters of small town USA. The story is well written and certainly holds the reader's attention. I came to care about the characters, liked some, loathed others and wanted to know what would happen to all of them as the action played out. Kudos to the author for that.
The enjoyment of the story is marred somewhat by formatting glitches and the ending, while fitting, was rather abrupt. All in all, a good read.
WWII forced many couples to declare their love in the hopes that a beloved girlfriend would wait for her man who was off in the awful trench warfare stretching across Europe. Sandy, a young boy, who worships the world of wartime aviation, is the one who accidentally hears something he shouldn't and is threatened by the town "quack" with violence if he utters a single word.
Virginia Sullivan's family are a unique lot. After Virginia reads in the local newspaper about her marriage by elopement to Will, she realizes that her father planted the story to protect her and the family's name. But just what is permissible when the young man, who may or may not be where everyone thinks he is, knows nothing of his supposed marriage or the fruit of that union?
Patriotism is stronger in this war than ever before, and it is Virginia's father, who owns the local paper, who controls the news and most of Tierra, Texas. Rationing is the rule of the day, but it turns out that just about anything can be obtained through the influence of Pappy Sullivan. While he's manipulating and maneuvering the news and everyone's lives, Virginia's brother, Bart, who has evaded the draft, is busy wrecking lives around him and committing an act against Virginia that will have far-reaching effects that are far larger than Bart imagines.
French Letters is the first of a planned series in which the reader meets small-town news, politics, culture and loyalty to a larger cause, WWII, which has transformed every life, even in a Southern backwater community like Tierra, Texas. Mr. London's got the characters, with their blatant flaws and virtues, exactly right, as well as the nature of wartime life in Southern America.
